Best and fairest award ideas and wording

What the award means, how clubs choose a winner, and how to make the trophy something the winner will keep.

What is a best and fairest award?

A best and fairest award goes to the player who has been the most consistent and the fairest over the season. It is the most prestigious honour at many clubs, particularly in Aussie Rules, football and netball, and winners are usually decided by coaches, players or a points system based on game by game votes.

Choosing the trophy

  • Make it the largest award on the night. A tall figure or cup shows its importance.
  • Add a perpetual trophy. Many clubs keep a perpetual trophy with a plate for each winner, and give the winner a smaller keeper trophy to take home. See our perpetual trophies guide.
  • Match it across grades. Using the same design in different sizes gives each grade a best and fairest that looks part of the same set.

Wording ideas

  • Best and Fairest, [Grade], [Year], [Name]
  • [Club Name] Best and Fairest, [Season], [Name]
  • Best and Fairest, Under 16s, [Name], Voted by Players and Coaches

Runner up and other player awards

Many clubs also present a runner up, a players' player, a most improved and a coach's award, so more players are recognised. Our sport pages, such as Aussie Rules, football and netball, list the awards clubs commonly give.

Questions

Quick answers

How do clubs decide a best and fairest winner?+

Methods vary. Many clubs use a vote count after each game from coaches or umpires, others use player voting, and some combine both. The club decides the process and tells us the winner's name for engraving.

What should a best and fairest trophy look like?+

There is no rule, but most clubs choose the biggest trophy in their range for it. A cup or tall figure on a plinth with an engraved plate works well.
